This Creamy Avocado Ranch Dressing and Dip is a homemade ranch dressing with avocado added to it. It's secretly healthy, made with avocados, nonfat Greek yogurt, ranch seasonings, and just a touch of mayonnaise. Make this avocado dressing as a dip for your next party, and watch it disappear!
Creamy Avocado Ranch Dressing and Dip
If you love a good, homemade ranch dressing, and you love avocados, you'll go crazy for this avocado dressing! This recipe uses nonfat Greek yogurt in place of the heaps of mayonnaise that usually dominate ranch dressing. Nothing against ranch or mayonnaise but I have a serious obsession with both, and I need to break up with it sometimes. If you follow my sneaky techniques with recipes that call for mayo, you know I almost always substitute it with nonfat Greek yogurt...and just a touch of mayo. Because I feel like I can't give up the crutch, and this combo allows me to feel good about indulging.Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise?
Yep, I want the protein and vitamins I get from a heap of yogurt, that I don't get from mayonnaise. When we use straight mayonnaise, like so many recipes require, we get more calories, fat, and cholesterol than I personally need. This avocado dressing is the perfect application for this substitute!
Should I use dried spices or fresh herbs for Ranch dressing?
You’ll notice I used dried herbs in this recipe, but I love Ranch with fresh herbs too! If you use fresh herbs, double the herb amounts in this recipe. Don't be afraid to experiment. It's forgiving...it's Ranch, after all.Uses for Avocado Dressing & Dip
- salad dressing
- nachos topping
- drizzle on burrito bowls or nachos
- taco / burrito condiment
- veggie dip
- sandwich spread
- pasta salad dressing
- french fry dip
Avocado Ranch recipe tips:
~ Use fresh garlic, not garlic powder. It's more authentic to ranch dressing. ~ Don't use overripe avocados b/c it won't look as pretty and will turn faster. ~ Feel free to adjust the yogurt to mayonnaise ratio to fit your dietary needs. ~ Turn this dressing into a gorgeous dip by omitting the milk.

Delish!i added about a heaping tsp. Of Trader Joe’s 21 salute. Yum
Traci Antonovich says
So glad you liked it, Amy...thanks for dropping by and letting me know 🙂
Nicole says
THANK YOU!! I have recently stopped consuming Mayonnaise, so have been experimenting with different homemade ranch recipes. Yours is the best I've found! I didn't use mayo, but used a little more Greek yogurt to replace it. I used powdered onion and garlic so the flavors would be more uniformly distributed. I also didn't have chives, but this recipe totally works with just the dill I had. Thank you SO much! AMAZING flavors and definite depth. Bonus that it's totally healthy!
Traci Antonovich says
Nicole, you've made my day...my week! Thank you so much for popping back by to let me know. I love ALL feedback, but especially the kind where someone finds a new fav recipe 🙂 Sounds like your substitutions worked well. Thanks again!
JoAnn says
Made your dressing just now with just a few subs. I didn’t have chives but did have dried scallions, used them. Added a jalapeño pepper to the mix, and deleted the milk all total. I’m on a Ketogenic eating lifestyle and everything works well except for the milk. Your recipe helps me get more healthy fats in my diet. Thanks for sharing such a versital recipe for us to enjoy. Mines in the frig letting the flavors meld. Can’t wait to have some this evening for dinner.
Traci Antonovich says
Hi JoAnn, great subs! In fact, I love to add jalapeno or serrano too, but I kept the recipe mild, knowing the spicy peeps would do add-ins 😉 Yep, super good w/o milk too! Thanks for commenting and rating...I appreciate you taking the time 🙂
Traci Antonovich says
Hi Pat, that's unfortunate, but I do try leave room in my recipes for people to modify because taste buds vary. Hopefully you found a flavor you enjoyed with your additions. Thanks for stopping by 🙂
Rasha says
Can I substitute mayo for the yogurt? Need dairy free
Traci Antonovich says
Yep, in fact, mayo-based ranch is more traditional than yogurt. Although I'd start out by using about 1/2 the mayo, just to make sure the recipe isn't too rich. You can adjust it as needed. Hope that helps! 🙂
Olivia says
Can I leave out the vinegar or sub something in for it?
Traci Antonovich says
Hi Olivia...yep, you can absolutely leave it out. In fact, you could substitute it with lemon juice and may not even notice any difference since both are so acidic. Hope that helps...enjoy! 🙂
Heather says
Just made this today for our taco salad. So good! We also loved the dip on chips. So much better than the other avacado dips I've made.
Traci Antonovich says
Heather...you just made my day! I love hearing this feedback, esp the fact that you love it as much as I do 🙂 Yay! Plenty more where that came from...stick around, I have more yummy dressing recipes in the works! oxo

This dressing can go on just about anything - it's so delicious! I'm putting it on rice and beans today for lunch!
Traci Antonovich says
Woohoo! Love hearing that (and I happen to totally agree...it goes on everything!). Thanks!
Jacqueline says
Can I replace the fresh avocado with already mashed commercial avocado?
Traci Antonovich says
Hi Jacqueline, heck ya! That's always a great workaround if you don't have ripe avocados 🙂
Veena says
I love avocado in my salad dressing but have never tried ranch. This sounds so delish. Cannot wait to try this.. Love how creamy it looks and that color.. SO pretty.
Traci Antonovich says

Thanks so much Kristina...it makes such a great salad! 🙂
Carol says
I don’t happen to have any plain Greek yogurt at the moment, can I sub sour cream?
The Kitchen Girl says
Hi Carol, sour cream can be subbed for Greek Yogurt, but it will change the nutrition information 🙂 Enjoy!
Jill says
It's such a pretty color of green too! Sounds like a recipe I need to try.
Traci Antonovich says
Thanks Jill! Hope you get a chance to try it 🙂
Jessica says
We love making our own dressings! My family would love this!
Traci Antonovich says
So glad to hear it! Thanks Jessica 😉
Christina says
This recipe is delicious! If I wanted to make it thicker though, do you have any ideas? Could I maybe add a little flaxseed meal?
Traci Antonovich says
Hi Christina, glad you like it! If you want to make it thicker, I'd start by holding back on the 1/2 cup of milk and see if that doesn't get you the right consistency. It will naturally be thicker, and if it's too thick, you can add small of amounts of milk to adjust it. Hope that helps! 🙂
Jolynn Lloyd says
Awesome recipe. Made it with an 'almost gone' avacado and used my immersion blender in a deep bowl. Great to make a yummy dressing with ingredients I have on hand. Thanks
.
Traci Antonovich says
Jolynn, this is the perfect use for almost gone avocados 🙂 Immersion blender works great too! So glad you like it...thanks for taking the time to let me know. That rocks!
Arielle says
Just made this recipe- so delicious!! Just enjoyed it with a homemade Cobb salad. Yum! (On a side note- do you use plain or vanilla Nonfat Greek yogurt?)
Traci Antonovich says
Arielle...you just made my day! And on a homemade Cobb salad...sounds awesome. Great question about the yogurt...I use 'plain' and I'll specify that in the recipe. Thanks so much for weighing in!
Heiney says
This sounds delish! I love ranch, and avocados and this just sounds great! I`m actually deployed and like any good deployment, I`ve managed to drop some serious weight, been looking for low cal substitutes for all my favorite sin foods. Cant wait to try this! Thanks
The Kitchen Girl says
Heyyyy, thanks so much for dropping by AND taking the time to comment...much appreciated! I'm def on board with swapping healthy fats for not-so-healthy fats, so that was the main inspiration behind this recipe. Hope you love it! Be sure to check out my other avocado recipes (just visit the home page and search the word "avocado" in the search bar...you'll see 'em!) and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks again!

I plugged this recipe into My Fitness Pal, and divided it by 12. The nutrition facts came out as follows: Cal - 30; total fat - 2g; Sodium - 25 mg; Sugars - 1 gm; Cholesterol - 1 gm. It seems pretty healthy on every front! It even has some extra vitamins, protein, and 1 gm of Iron. An all around healthy topping to go with a healthy salad.
The Kitchen Girl says
Wow!...so cool that you not only looked it up but reported it here in my recipe comments. Way to go! I'm working on nutrition information for my site. Eventually, I'll have it for each recipe. Stay tuned for that! And thanks again for being awesome! 🙂
Margaret says
Thanks for a great alternative to store bought dressings. I enjoy finding easy to make great recipes- living in a small town I can't always find the ingredients if they are not simple.
Traci Antonovich says
Margaret, you're soooo welcome! I have more dressing recipes in the hopper, just haven't been published yet. Stay tuned. And I'm so glad to help you solve that problem 🙂 Thanks for letting me know...really keeps me motivated! Happy Sunday
Val says
Im curious about the fat content per serving. Also, how much is a serving?
Traci Antonovich says
Hey Val, thanks for the questions? I went ahead and updated the servings on the recipe just for you 😉 The recipe makes 3 cups (24 oz) and I consider 1/8 cup (2 oz) to be pretty standard for an individual salad dressing serving. So, this recipe makes 12 (2oz) servings.
As for the fat content, you're welcome to run this recipe through your preferred analyzer. Hope that helps and thanks again for stopping by! 🙂
Jenn says
Can I freeze this recipe? It makes a lot! Lol. And if iy can be frozen, how long do you recommend before it should be thrown away?
Traci Antonovich says
Hi Jenn...thanks for commenting! You actually can freeze this dressing, but I would make sure it's in a very airtight container or vacuum sealed. To thaw, just leave it in the fridge overnight. If not frozen, my usual shelf life in the fridge is right around 5 days.
Btw, did you know you could freeze avocados? Pretty cool! Here's an article you might like to read on that.
Hope that helps and thanks so much for asking!
allie ketcham says
