Why you'll love blood orange mimosas

    1. The perfect holiday mimosa
    2. Easy to make
    3. Sweetness can be customized

The blood orange mimosa is a classic mimosa cocktail made with sparkling wine and blood orange juice in place of orange juice. The red hue and fresh herb garnish make this a festive recipe for winter holidays and special occasions.

Since mimosas are made of sparkling wine and orange juice, you don’t have to be a mixologist to master this one. In fact, you simply combine equal parts of sparkling wine with blood orange juice, garnish, and serve.

Blood oranges and their juice are usually less sweet than conventional oranges. I personally prefer this in a mimosa, but I included the option to adjust the sweetness in the recipe notes.

    Ingredient notes

Ingredient amounts are included in the printable recipe below.

    • sparkling wine - Prosecco is very popular because it's widely available and an affordable option, but any sparkling wine will make this a great cocktail.
    • blood orange juice - You can buy this packaged or squeeze the juice fresh. Blood oranges are in season in the US between November and May and are sold in grocery stores across the country.
    • fresh rosemary - This adds a pop of color and flavor that pairs well with this blend. Fresh thyme or mint will work nicely here too.

How to make blood orange mimosas

The printable instructions are in the recipe card below.

    1. Fill each serving glass with equal parts of sparkling wine and blood orange juice. If a 60/40 or 70/30 blend suits you, go for it!
    2. Garnish with blood orange slices and fresh rosemary or fresh thyme.
    3. Serve chilled.

    Recipe tips

When selecting sparkling wine for this recipe, popular categories include Champagne (France), Prosecco (Italy), and Cava (Spain). Depending on the brand, sparkling wine is available in white or rosé.

Since mimosas are mixed cocktails, you don't need to splurge too much on the sparkling wine, but you still want quality. So, we like to spend between $10 to $20 per 750 ml bottle and save the more expensive bubbles for sipping and toasting.

I recommend refrigerating sparkling wine at least 4 hours before mixing mimosas for optimal cocktail temperature.

I do not recommend mixing this cocktail in advance because the sparkling wine will lose its carbonation, which results in a flat cocktail that won't be enjoyed.

If using fresh blood oranges, save time by squeezing and refrigerating the juice in an airtight container up to 2 days in advance.

Make blood orange juice sweeter by adding add small amounts of simple syrup to the juice or to individual mimosa servings, as needed.

Mimosas are commonly served in a champagne flute. You'll notice stemless wine glasses in my photos because they're perfect for clumsy people like me.

    Serving ideas

Serve blood orange mimosas as a cocktail with holiday breakfast and brunch recipes, or any special occasion. Mimosas are delicious with these recipes:

    • appetizers - Christmas charcuterie board or simple meat and cheese tray
    • egg breakfast - crustless quiche, ham and cheddar quiche, ham and cheese omelette, eggs benedict, or asparagus bacon egg casserole
    • salad - citrus salad or kale salad
    • pancakes and quick bread - chocolate pancakes, muffins, one-bowl banana bread, crepes, or super easy dutch baby pancake
    • bread - holiday cranberry walnut bread, crostini for bruschetta
    • fish and seafood - smoked salmon dip, shrimp cocktail, crab dip, or pan seared Chilean sea bass

Thanks for this simple and lovely idea. It must keep this mimosa really nice and fizzy since you aren’t using plain old OJ. Plus I adore blood orange soda, so I will definitely be trying this!

Yay Brandi! Love hearing that 🙂 Just be ready to add something sweet to it if the blood oranges aren't sweet enough. It happens. Enjoy!!

Haha thanks Jill, we must be related LOL. If you do find these to be too bitter though, you can always add simple syrup, or plain OJ, or even a liqueur. It just depends on the blood oranges...they can be so different 🙂

Mmmmm. I've had blood orange mimosas before, and they are just delicious. I love the idea of adding some rosemary to them for garnish. It must add a nice earthy flavor. Yum!
