Smoked salmon dip with a healthy twist
Smoked salmon dip is perfect for brunch, holiday parties, weekend breakfast, or even breakfast during the workweek. It's usually made smoked salmon, cream cheese, mayonnaise, and seasoning ingredients.
Instead of using sour cream for this recipe, I use Greek yogurt to knock down the fat calories and add a little protein. If you know me, you know this is one of my favorite recipes hacks.

What salmon do I use for smoked salmon dip?
Sliced smoked salmon is the most common type used in this style of salmon dip. It's packaged in thin flat slices and commonly referred to as 'lox'. It's very rich, salty, and a little goes a long way.
In fact, for this recipe, you'll want to taste the dip before adding any salt to it, as it may be unnecessary.
How to make salmon dip
* see recipe card below for FULL PRINTABLE recipe
- Blend softened cream cheese, Greek yogurt, horseradish, lemon juice, pepper, salt, and Worcestershire together in a bowl.
- Fold in the smoked salmon and dill.
- Serve immediately or refrigerate in an airtight container up to 5 days.
How to serve smoked salmon on a budget
If you serve sliced, smoked salmon on a platter to party guests, those slices disappear in no time, and the dollars add up quickly. This smoked salmon dip is the ticket!
If you're entertaining on a budget, you can buy smoked salmon in bulk, freeze it in smaller portions, thaw as needed, and create elegant party dips like this.
When it's party time, break out the portioned salmon to make this dip and serve it on a tray with crackers, bread, and vegetables.
This way, you cover a lot more ground with less cost.

Awww, gotta love mom's favorites! And thank you for the kind words, Giju. I'm so glad you enjoy my recipes βΊοΈ
Sadly Trader Joe's no longer carries Smoked Salmon Ends and Pieces!
I know...too bad! I was hooked on that price, esp for this salmon dip π
What a perfect appetizer! I actually made a batch of this to go with brunch. Doubled it and put it with the bagel bar. It was an absolute hit and everyone enjoyed π
Courtney, you just made my day! I mean, I love this dip, but I love it even more when someone else does. I really value your feedback...thanks so much! π
I absolutely adore smoked salmon in any form. I'm thrilled that you use horseradish in this dip! Smoked salmon and horseradish are totally made for each other. I'll never tell my guests that the whole affair is a "light" appetizer.
Haha, yes...we'll keep it our secret, Kirsten π Hope they love it like we do!
Perfect timing for me to find this recipe. I"m in charge of the appetizers this week and I just love how you lightened this up. I appreciate the tip on finding the bits and ends a bit cheaper, because it doesn't matter for this recipe anyhow. Thank you.
Awesome Debra! I love good timing π Yes, hope your guests love this one...it's a fav over here. Enjoy the holiday week!
You can invite me over for this dip ANYTIME YOU WANT girl! YUM! I love all things smoked salmon, and mixing it with Greek yogurt for a dip is so smart! (I go through SO MUCH Greek yogurt.) And I had no idea Trader Joes sells end pieces of smoked salmon for cheaper- I'll look for that!
Thanks Sarah...consider yourself always invited! Yes, TJ's is the hookup for more affordable salmon, especially for a spread like this. Can't wait for you to try!
I'm so glad I found this recipe! We recently bought a rather large package of smoked salmon at Costco, and it's delicious, but I've been trying to figure out what to do with all of it, haha! So much salmon. This dip looks fantastic, and I love that it has Greek yogurt in it. Perfect for entertaining this holiday season, especially when I have overnight guests who need a morning nosh.
Thanks Amanda! I buy that same salmon at Costco and it's so perfect for this recipe. Hope your guests love it like I do π
Ooh I'm so in love with the color of this dip and I love the idea of serving it at a party (or perhaps for a Thanksgiving appetizer!). I love that there's a nice kick of horseradish in it. Thank you also for your tips about making it on a budget- I guess I need to make a trip to Trader Joe's!
Yay Sues! So glad to give you the scoop π Your salmon-loving guests will LOVE this for an appetizer!
I love smoked salmon and never thought of adding it to my yogurt dip! That sounds like such a delicious combination of flavours. Do you know how long this could be kept out? I'm thinking it'd go well with a cheese and crackers board this holiday season.
Thanks Carmy! I've served it charcuterie style before and have kept it out for a few hours. In fact, just like a soft-ripened cheese, it only becomes easier to spread at that point. And you have to factor in that it won't last very long π
Haha, I know if I went to a party where this was served, I would be the primary reason it would disappear so quickly! Smoked salmon dip is my favorite and I also love it when the dip is healthier. This definitely needs to be an appetizer on Thanksgiving day, my family is also a big fan of smoked salmon.
Omgosh, you and I would become BFF's over the salmon spread at a party LOL. Thanks for the compliment π
Smoked salmon is hands down one of my most favorite things in the world. I legit feel sorry for people who don't like it. Lol. This recipe is fabulous. Not only because of the smoked salmon, but the use of Greek yogurt. I always have that stuff kickin' around in my fridge because it's SO great for dips and spreads, or for anything that needs a creamy kick while you're trying to stay on the healthier side. Why not indulge and get a hefty does of protein? π
Yep Dana, I'm convinced we're related...I use Greek yogurt for everything too LOL. Love me some salmon too! π
I think that's brilliant using both greek yogurt and cream cheese. I find that using non-fat greek yogurt alone leaves recipes a little thin. The texture of the cream cheese seems perfect for this dip. Saving this, what a great, healthy alternative for the holiday season. Thanks!
Thanks Tina! Yep, the cream cheese and NF yogurt is def one of my fav hat tricks for recipes like this π I even use a less-fat cream cheese, so I can eat more LOL.
Now this is the kind of appetizer I love to put out at the holidays. Simple to make, flavorful and lightened up so that you can enjoy the rest of the meal without the bloat. The Greek yogurt is a great substitute for mayonnaise, but I'm wondering if you could also use neufchatel instead of cream cheese -- to cut the calories even further. What do you think?
Thanks Lisa! Yep, in fact, I love using a neufchatel or reduced fat cream cheese and can never tell the difference. I always leave that one up to my readers π Happy holidays to you!
It has only been the last couple of years that I have started to enjoy smoked salmon. NOW I LOVE it. This is the perfect recipe for all the holiday parties that are about to start. I could eat this for breakfast, lunch and dinner too. Easy to make and even easier to eat.
Thanks Gloria! I could eat this for every meal too π Happy holidays to you!
I love making smoked salmon spread and your recipe looks like a great twist. The Worcestershire adds a unique kick. Can't wait to try your version!
Thanks Jenni! So glad to hear it and I hope you get to try it! π
I see why this is so popular at parties. This is a beautifully simple dish. I enjoyed the video, too.
Thanks SO much Lesli! Love hearing that! You're right...it is sooo simple π
I just love this combination of flavors - fresh dill is the such an underused herb, and goes SO well with salmon and also with yogurt. This is a fabulous app!
Thanks so much, Monica! I agree about fresh dill! I eat it all year π€
I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I've never had a smoked salmon dip! This sounds amazing!
Thanks Pam! I think youβre not alone, actually. Itβs a must try!π€
Smoked salmon is my absolute fav! But made into a spread!? This is next level stuff, can't wait to try it!!! Thanks for sharing π
Haha AWESOME!!! Love hearing that...itβs my fav way to eat it, hands down!!
I like that this recipe is lightened up and budget friendly. Great post!
Thanks so much Jill! Love hearing that π€
How long will this keep? Can I make ahead?
Hi Amanda, I would make it two days in advance of your event, maximum. Any more than that might give less favorable results. Thanks for asking...enjoy!
I love smoked salmon - this looks like the perfect dip for parties!
Thank you! Yes, it is perfect for parties, esp this time of year π
Can't wait to try these!! I love the combo of all these things but I never blend them together lol Now that's my next step!
Oh I hope you do it! It's so delicious and healthy...perfect for holidays, or breakfast any day!
What a great spread for the holiday appetizer board. I usually buy this type of spread because I've been too hesitant to make it fresh but your recipe looks so tasty and easy to make I will be saving this recipe to make over the holidays. Yum!
