    Why you'll love this recipe

    • Mango salsa is a fruity, tangy, spicy, and sweet flavor explosion.
    • It's quick and easy to make for any cooking level.
    • This salsa is festive and loaded with nutrients.
    • Serve it as a party appetizer or topping for fish and meat entrees.

Fresh mango salsa is one of my favorite ways to use ripe, juicy mangoes, especially when they're in season and on sale. This nutrition-packed fresh fruit salsa is so juicy and compatible with so many things. It's perfect for summer cookouts and game day gatherings.

    Ingredient notes

Recipe amounts are listed in the printable recipe card below.

    • mango - The star ingredient of mango salsa where sweetness balances with acidic lime juice and jalapeño spice. The softness also complements the tender-crisp vegetables for a pleasing texture.
    • avocado - Adds a rich, nutty flavor and creaminess, which uniquely balances the texture.
    • cucumber - Use any cucumber variety for this recipe. Peel or remove seeds, if needed.
    • red bell pepper - Adds gorgeous color, crunch, and flavor to mango salsa.
    • onion - I recommend red onions for this recipe because they're crispy. colorful, and complement the sweet and spicy flavors.
    • jalapeño pepper - Always taste-test the heat level before adding to the salsa because no two jalapeños are alike when it comes to spiciness.
    • cilantro - A key flavor ingredient in traditional Mexican salsa, especially when mixed with lime.
    • fresh lime - Fresh lime juice is always my recommendation for fresh salsa, but packaged lime juice will certainly work as a substitute.
    • garlic cloves - Fresh garlic is a must for salsa in my book but, of course, it's optional.
    • salt and pepper - Add to taste.

    How to make this recipe

Homemade mango salsa is as easy as chopping fresh produce, combining everything, and squeezing fresh lime. I've included a few step-by-step photos to inspire you. Feel free to skip down to the printable recipe card.

Step 1. Dice fresh mango, cucumber, red bell pepper, red onion, jalapeño pepper, and (see recipe footnote) avocado. Finely grate or mince garlic and finely chop cilantro. Place everything in a bowl. Squeeze fresh lime over the ingredients.

Mango salsa is a great appetizer with tortilla chips or topping for juicy meat and seafood entrees.

    Recipe tips

    • Select ripe mangoes. Always test mango ripeness by feel, not by color. A ripe mango has a slight give when gently squeezed and a fruity aroma.
    • Use ripe avocados. Select dark green or nearly black avocado. Just like a ripe mango, a ripe avocado should yield to pressure when gently pressed.
    • Time-saver. Look for pre-cut mangoes, onions, and bell pepper in your produce section.
    • When to add avocados. If avocados are overly soft, gently tossing them with the salsa right before serving will prevent them becoming mushy.
    • When to add lime juice. Lime juice prevents browning, but also macerates fruit, which softens it. Because of this, I prefer to add lime to mango salsa no more than 1 day ahead to preserve the semi-firm texture of the produce. Add the lime 2 to 3 days ahead for a saucy salsa.

    Recipe variations

    • Add other fruits, such as pineapple or papaya for a tropical flavor. Or, add fresh peaches to make your own version of Costo mango salsa.
    • Increase the spice level by adding more jalapeño to your mango salsa. Use Serrano or habanero peppers for even more heat. Or, make a non-spicy mango salsa by simply leaving the hot peppers behind.
    • Add black beans to mango salsa for added flavor, nutrients, color, texture, and volume.

    Serving ideas

Mango salsa is a delicious appetizer or party dip that demands tortilla chips and a side of Mexican guacamole. It's also a colorful and nutritious topping! Use mango salsa for seafood, such as garlic butter grilled salmon, easy broiled salmon, pan seared sea bass, or grilled shrimp. Of course it's delicious with this grilled chicken tacos recipe too!

This past week I've been making a variety of salsas and Mexican specialties to make up for our lost trip. I can hardly wait to try your delicious Mango salsa. Yum. Yum.
