Everywhere we turn, nut free is the word. I’m food-allergy free, but I like to help those who aren’t. It’s also late summer, a time when we should urgently make things like my Nut Free Raw Detox Smoothie as a last hurrah of local, summer produce. Are you feeling those fall weather vibes?
Nut Free Raw Detox Smoothie
First things first, you guys know I’m not a raw / vegan / food-allergy blogger. Buuuuut, you do know I love to eat a plant-forward diet and will write recipes that reflect that. Turns out, most of my recipes are gluten-free, many are vegetarian, and some are vegan. Now that I think about it, most don’t use nuts…like this one.
And because it’s summer, let’s jam on that for a second.
Summer is the perfect season to take advantage of plant-based foods that come straight from the source. This is the time of year when we can get abundant, fresh picked, truly raw, plant-ripened produce that hasn’t been previously frozen or transported. Unless you live in Stickville, USA, you likely have access to local produce during peak season.
Now, I created this smoothie recipe mostly from produce in our yard, but I realize not everyone has a garden, or even a decent farmer’s market.
A year-round detox smoothie?
You guys know I love to write seasonal recipes, and this one is no exception. But the ingredients for this recipe also are available at any grocery store during any season. And the detox potential? Collectively, these ingredients contain fiber, potassium, vitamin C, iron, calcium, vitamin B-6, chlorophyll, and enzymes to name the major players. Cheers to this beautiful cup of natural antioxidants!
Here are the ingredients:
- Microgreens (I used sunflower sprouts…yum!)
- Ice & water
And here are the tools you’ll find handy for this recipe:
Seriously…no joke on the high-speed blender. A regular kitchen blender will leave your smoothies chunky and chewy…yuk!
My go-to, high-speed blender has been (for the past few years) a NutriBullet Pro 900 for any day, single-serve, smoothies. I also use it for milkshakes, salad dressings, chopping nuts, and grinding coffee (really fine!). It’s a top-recommended tool her at TKG headquarters.
I recently gained special access to a Vitamix (from my next-door neighbor)…and I’m loving the results of that too! Now, don’t go and make me decide which one I like better, because I don’t think that scale will ever tip. That’s saying a lot for both products!
If you have any questions about any of my recommended Essential Kitchen Tools, please shoot me an email or post in the ‘comments’ section below.
Either way, when it comes to drinking fruits and vegetables, I prefer blending over juicing. The reason is crystal clear to me. I want the fiber that comes with the produce when blended and I don’t want it stripped out, which is what happens with a juicer.
Let’s review…what’s to love about this Nut Free Raw Detox Smoothie?
